Promoting opportunity.

Here are thirteen (13) things YOUR ORGANIZATION or BUSINESS can do to improve "Opportunity" in Iowa.


Ask each of your members or employees to sign on to the Individual Commitment to Opportunity and then support and encourage their actions and progress.

Take time to think about what your organization or business has accomplished in the community, and what it would like to accomplish. Talk to your members or employees.

Determine what opportunities your organization or business has that have not been acted on that could improve your success and the success of your community. Act on the opportunities.


Look at the list of supporters of Opportunity Nation and Opportunity Iowa. Encourage your members and employees volunteer to help in some way that they would otherwise not have done. Keep track of their volunteerism.

Make a list of all the persons, charities, and groups your organization or business supports. Make sure a portion of your charitable contributions support organizations that help others pursue opportunities.

Make a list of persons, charities, and groups your organization or company should be helping that you currently don't. Help them.

Provide volunteer time off for employees, and considering selecting a single organization to support.

Encourage other organizations or businesses around you to focus on their "opportunities," and then act on them. Inspire them by talking about the benefits of such actions for your organization and community.

Have at least one event this year focusing on "opportunity" and what it means to your organization or community. Help organize the effort. Report your opportunity events to the Opportunity Iowa site. Encourage associations you or your business joins to support opportunity creating policies.

Discuss Opportunity Iowa with politicians and political candidates and, where necessary, help education them.

Add a standing item on your monthly meeting agenda for your members to report on "What have you done during the month to create an opportunity for an individual or support an opportunity organization." Recognize and celebrate members who have exceeded beyond expectations in supporting Opportunities for Iowans.
